A bill to remove the gray wolf from protections of the federal Endangered Species Act passed out of the House Natural Resources Committee on Friday.
The proposal, tabbed the Trust the Science Act, is sponsored by Reps. Tom Tiffany (R-Wisconsin) and Lauren Boebert (R-Colorado).
It seeks to permanently remove the gray wolf from the list of federal endangered species and restore wolf management authority to state lawmakers and state wildlife officials.

U.S. Rep. Tom Tiffany, a Wisconsin Republican and chair of the House Natural Resources Committee’s panel on federal lands, said the agency needs to usher in a new phase of accountability and transparency if it wants “reverse the tide against this historic crisis.”
Tiffany pointed to a yearslong restoration project that has struggled to treat wide swaths of land spanning four national forests in northern Arizona, saying the agency has reported more acres being treated than what regional managers have submitted.

Topics during the Roundtable Discussion ranged from combating opioids, qualified immunity, and how the Chippewa Valley can better support local law enforcement officers. Chippewa County Sheriff Travis Hakes was in attendance Monday, as well as county sheriffs from Polk, St. Croix, Barron, Sawyer, and Burnett counties.

The proposal angered Republicans, who oppose both the DACA program—which they consider an illegal use of the government’s immigration authority—as well as expanding most federal health benefits, particularly the Affordable Care Act. For years, Republicans campaigned on repealing the Obama-era health law before failing to overturn it in 2017.
