This week I returned from a trip to the Darien Gap in Panama, a lawless frontier area where South America and Central America meet – and where thousands of migrants from across the globe begin their treacherous journey to the United States in earnest. What I encountered during my visit confirmed what most Americans have known for a very long time: President Biden’s repeated and reckless promises of amnesty, refusal to enforce immigration laws and rollback of common-sense Trump-era border controls are fueling a tidal wave of illegal immigration from places as far away as Africa, Eastern Europe and the Middle East.

This week the House of Representatives reconvened for legislative activity. But before we get to that, we wanted to talk again about the worsening crisis on our southern border. With inflationary price increases and the return of 1970s-style lines at gas stations grabbing headlines, the situation on our border with Mexico may have been bumped off the front page, but it isn’t getting any better. We continue to see record crossing numbers and disturbing reports of serious criminals attempting to slip in amid the surge.

In just over 100 days, we have seen the results of one-party rule with no meaningful checks or balances. But those consequences really came into sharper focus this week.

We wanted to start off this week by reminding everyone that Mother’s Day is right around the corner. So if you haven’t already – make sure you get out there and pick up something nice for Mom.

This week lawmakers did not convene for legislative activity, but President Biden addressed a sparsely attended joint session of Congress to report on the first 100 days of his administration, and his plans for the future.

Last week we told you about the House majority’s effort to pack the Supreme Court. This week, they are looking to “pack” the U.S. Senate – by unconstitutionally adding the District of Columbia as the nation’s 51st State. Like the “court packing” proposal we told you about last week, Speaker Pelosi’s “Senate packing” scheme is another partisan power play – this one driven by a desire to add two new U.S. Senators. Not only is this a bad idea, it runs afoul of the Constitution, which would have to be amended to allow D.C.’s admission as a state. I strongly opposed this unconstitutional power grab in the last Congress and voted against it this week, too.

I wanted to start off this week by letting those of you who haven’t heard that the IRS has pushed back the deadline for individuals to file their taxes. You can read about the change to see how it might affect you, and remember, you can always contact my district office if you have questions. This week the Democrat-controlled House of Representatives reconvened for legislative activity, and as they have in recent months, they picked up right where they left off before the Easter Holiday, promoting more bad ideas. As Telegram readers know, I am a member of the House Judiciary Committee. And two of the most extreme ideas – packing the U.S. Supreme Court and promoting “reparations” for slavery – fall directly under the panel’s jurisdiction.

We hope you had a joyful Easter holiday with your friends and family. This week I traveled to Texas as part of a congressional fact-finding mission to get a first-hand look at the chaotic situation that is spiraling out of control on America’s southern border. Like many of you, I have been following disturbing news reports about the growing illegal immigration crisis that began almost immediately after President Biden was sworn in, and I can tell you that things are even worse than we’ve been told.

Democrats continued their push to impose far reaching gun control bills this week after a man reportedly gunned down several people in a Boulder, Colorado grocery store. In the immediate aftermath of the attack, several high-profile progressives made false and inflammatory claims about the alleged assailant’s background and sought to politicize the tragedy. Former President Obama and his wife described those of us standing up for the Second Amendment as “cowardly,” and President Biden demanded a ban on semi-automatic rifles. What they didn’t tell you is that many of the gun control measures some Democrats in Washington, DC are demanding – including so-called “universal” background checks, “red flag” laws, a ban on so-called “high capacity magazines” and “assault weapons” – are already on the books in the community where this shooting occurred, and they did absolutely nothing to prevent it.

Speaker Pelosi’s playbook for running the House of Representatives is beginning to look a lot like the classic movie Groundhog Day – another week, another package of controversial, outside-the-mainstream bills fast-tracked through Congress without committee hearings, no opportunity for Republicans to offer amendments, and rubber-stamped by a partisan majority.
