Tiffany, Perry Reintroduce Resolution to End “One China Policy,” Expand Diplomatic, Economic Ties with Taiwan
WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Tom Tiffany (WI-07) led 18 members of Congress in reintroducing legislation calling for the U.S. to resume formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan and end the outdated and counter-productive “One China Policy.” The resolution also directs the Biden administration to support Taiwan's membership in international organizations, and to negotiate a bilateral U.S.-Taiwan Free Trade Agreement.
“The world has undergone dramatic changes since the days of Richard Nixon and Jimmy Carter, and it's time that U.S. policy reflected that fact. Taiwan is a free, democratic, and independent country – one that has never been under the control of the People’s Republic of China or part of its territory. Any suggestion to the contrary is simply a lie,” said Congressman Tom Tiffany.
“It’s time to change the status quo and recognize the reality denied by the United States government for decades: Taiwan is an independent Nation. As our long-standing and valued partner, correctly acknowledging their independence from Communist China is long overdue,” said Congressman Scott Perry.
Background:
The U.S. maintained normal diplomatic relations with the government in Taiwan until 1979 when then-President Jimmy Carter abruptly cut off formal ties with Taipei and recognized the Communist regime in Beijing.
Lawmakers responded by approving the bipartisan Taiwan Relations Act (TRA), the cornerstone of continued U.S. ties with the island. President Reagan upgraded the relationship during his term with the “Six Assurances,” which made clear that the United States, which has never accepted Communist China’s claims of sovereignty over Taiwan, “has not altered its position.”
Despite the TRA and the "Six Assurances," the U.S. still lacks formal ties with Taiwan, inexplicably treating the island's democratically elected government the same way it treats brutal regimes in North Korea and Iran from a diplomatic perspective – and in a category worse than that of Cuba's dictatorship, which President Obama and Vice President Biden recognized during their second term.
Last Congress, Congressman Tiffany introduced this legislation with one original cosponsor. In this session of Congress, 18 members of Congress have already signed on to Rep. Tiffany’s resolution as original cosponsors, including: Reps. Buddy Carter (GA-01), Dan Crenshaw (TX-02), Scott DesJarlais (TN-04), Byron Donalds (FL-19), Bob Good (VA-05), Lance Gooden (TX-05), Doug LaMalfa (CA-01), Jake LaTurner (KS-02), Nancy Mace (SC-01), Nicole Malliotakis (NY-11), Lisa McClain (MI-09), Tom McClintock (CA-05), Ralph Norman (SC-05), Andy Ogles (TN-05), Burgess Owens (UT-04), Scott Perry (PA-10), Michelle Steel (CA-45), and Randy Weber (TX-14).
