Tiffany Introduces Legislation to Rename Marshfield Post Office After Distinguished Army Veteran
WASHINGTON, DC – Yesterday, Congressman Tom Tiffany (WI-07) introduced legislation to honor the service and sacrifice of Army Corporal Gordon “Gordy” Richard Schmoll by renaming the United States Post Office in Marshfield as the "Army Corporal Gordon 'Gordy' Richard Schmoll Post Office Building." For gallantry in World War II, Gordy was awarded the Victory Medal, two bronze battle stars, and a Purple Heart.
"Corporal Schmoll devoted his life to what he cherished most: his family, his faith, and his country, serving in World War II," said Congressman Tiffany. "His legacy will be forever remembered amongst the Marshfield community with this postal renaming."
H.R. 6119 would rename the United States Post Office located at 202 South Chestnut Avenue in Marshfield, Wisconsin, as the "Army Corporal Gordon 'Gordy' Richard Schmoll Post Office Building." Army Corporal Schmoll, a Marshfield native, entered the United States Army in 1943 and served in France and Germany during World War II. Among the honors he received were the Victory Medal and two bronze battle stars on the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon, along with the Purple Heart Medal for wounds received in combat. He carried out his duties until his honorable discharge on January 10, 1946, when he returned to Marshfield. Gordy was also a member of VFW Post 1866. On February 23, 2013, he passed away at age of 89.
Representatives Bryan Steil (WI-01), Derrick Van Orden (WI-03), Gwen Moore (WI-04), Scott Fitzgerald (WI-05), Glenn Grothman (WI-06), and Tony Wied (WI-08) are original cosponsors of H.R. 6119.
