Necedah post office to be renamed after local Purple Heart veteran

By: Benjamin Cadigan

A post office in Necedah will soon be renamed after a local hero.

A bill was officially signed into law renaming the town’s post office as the Sergeant Kenneth E. Murphy Post Office Building.

Murphy has lived in Necedah his whole life, and received the Distinguished Service Cross and Purple Heart for his service in Vietnam.

“It was my greatest honor to serve my country alongside patriots of the 101st Airborne Div.,” Murphy said. “This honor being bestowed upon me humbles me to my core. I could never have imagined it.”

Officials say Murphy ran through a hail of bullets to try to help several wounded soldiers. He was wounded twice, including once in the head, but led an assault that overwhelmed the enemy.

The bill was introduced by Rep. Tom Tiffany and signed by President Joe Biden. The entire Wisconsin delegation co-sponsored the bill.
